Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Halloween scares me.  My mother was never a huge fan of Halloween, and while I’ve grown to enjoy the holiday, I’m not somebody who revels in the darkness of what Halloween is all about.  Last year Arun, Little Bear paid a visit to the local Halloween supply store that had set up shop in our neighbourhood.  Let’s just say the visit was brief but memorable, and not in a good way.  The goriest I can go is a red handprint window cling or an obviously fake hand sticking out of a flower bed.  We have some neighbours a block away that go all out every Halloween.  Jason in the window.  Graveyard in the front yard.  You can hear the children screaming for miles on Halloween night as they dare to collect their candy from this awesome spectacle.

My version of Halloween is tamer.  Think of candy corn and a cartoony ghost in the window.  This year I want to get a bit more into it.  Not Jason in the window into it, though! (Hats off to my neighbours though!)  Here are a few ideas that I found and loved…

1. How cute are these DIY Sidewalk Skulls by Hello! Lucky? Free printable? Yes please!  I will be making these – not for our front yard, but for a garland that I will hang in our front window!

2. Another great garland idea can be found at Disney Family. Taking inspiration from Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas, this garland seems surprisingly simple to make!

3. Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere! It’s a bit early to buy and carve that pumpkin and have it last until Halloween, right? Wrong! I don’t typically buy bleach, but I may have to go out and get some to try this out! Bleach + water, with a little rub of Vaseline after, and voila, preserved pumpkins!

4. Speaking of pumpkins, aren’t these personalized pumpkins by Tamara of Discovering Parenthood perfect? They can be used over and over again, too, since they use artificial pumpkins as opposed to real ones.  Love all the possibilities with this!  If you’re from the Lower Mainland, you’ll also want to check out Tamara’s posts about the best pumpkin patches to visit!

5. High impact, low expense, this spider web décor idea by How About Orange is made out of black garbage bags.

6. Some of these ideas are, unfortunately, disposable.  Thumbs down, sad face.  I love it when décor ideas can be stored and used again and again.  Here is a great “Boo” door hanger that is easy to store away for future use.  While you’re checking out the door hanger, do take a look at the rest of The Pinning Mama’s site – so much to love all over her blog!

7. I love The Chew.  I mean, what’s not to love? There’s food, talking, and celebrities.  This idea for floating ghosts made from cheesecloth has been all over Pinterest, but because I love Clinton Kelly, here’s his version of the tutorial.

8. These pumpkin candles would be perfect around a deck or porch while you sip a latte or hot cocoa in the cool autumn evenings.

9. I love this take on the mummy-wrapped doorway by Amanda of Refocus on Being.  I’ve seen this on main entry doors before, but never liked the idea because of our windy, rainy, autumn weather.  Our house has no covered porch, so a doorway would quickly get destroyed by the elements.

10. I have branches begging for this to happen. Check it out at Mom Endeavours.

11. Na na na na na na na na BATMAN!  I think these weatherproof bats by Condo Blues would compliment the spooky tree by Mom Endeavours beautifully!

12. If you love your pumpkins and want to make a big splash without spending a lot of money, this post is a round up by A Night Owl of some of the (many) ways that you can jazz up dollar store pumpkins! Love the link for the book page pumpkins!

13. Another idea I’m absolutely in love with (for indoor or outdoor) are these beautiful and easy to create luminaries by Making Lemonade.  It would be perfect to have seasonal options that you swap in and out of these luminaries…or even as a DIY nightlight in your little one’s room! I’m definitely making these this year.

14. This is my kind of skull. In fact, I’m a bit jealous that these skulls can pull off that collar better than I ever could.
